Reintegration
1 to 1, 24 hour per day, Companion-Assisted Reintegration is based on the idea that, for certain clients, discharge from primary treatment directly back home with little structure is by itself potentially traumatic, triggering, and a catalyst for relapse.
What is a Companion-Assisted Reintegration specialist and what do they do?
- A source of honest feedback regarding self-destructive patterns of thinking, feeling and acting while it happens in real-time;
- Living proof of the transformative power of recovery; provides stage-appropriate recovery education and advice;
- Identifies and helps resolve personal and environmental obstacles to recovery;
- Assists individuals/families to develop sobriety-based rituals of daily living;
- A solid link between treatment and the home environment.
What a Companion-Assisted Reintegration specialist isn't and what they do not do?
- They are not a therapist. Well-trained recovery guides are very aware of the line between therapy and mentoring and are careful to honor that line and refer out to therapists when indicated;
- They are not a replacement for primary treatment, a 12-Step program, or clinical care;
- They are not a nurse/physician (do not make medical diagnoses or offer medical advice);
- They are not their to simply hang out. This is about structure and accountability and guidance;
- They are not paid sponsor. They do not represent AA or other twelve-step organizations. They do not take clients through the steps.
Why can this type of support be so important?
People completing treatment are precariously balanced between recovery and re-addiction and current models of intervention are plagued by high post-treatment relapse and re-admission rates.

Important Considerations when working with a companion:
- How long will the companion be required;
- Development and prioritization of recovery goals;
- Developing guidelines about the support person’s role in helping a client achieve their goals;
- Sleeping arrangements;
- Confidentiality: for example, what is the support person allowed to discuss and with whom? Will the support person be expected to communicate with family members, doctors, therapists or practitioners in your local area?
- Rehearsing resumption of use scenarios so it is clear what will happen in the event of a recurrence;
- What are the boundaries of the support person’s role as a recovery professional?
